Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I find the Victorian Children’s Clinic?
We are located at: 151 Wattletree Road, Malvern VIC
Look out for our yellow door — this is the entrance to the Victorian Children’s Clinic Village.
Will I need to wait when I arrive?
Occasionally there may be a short wait due to the needs of other children or unexpected delays. Children’s pathology collection can sometimes take longer than expected as we prioritise making sure each child feels safe, comfortable, and supported.
If you have any concerns when you arrive, please speak with our friendly team.
Can I use numbing cream or patches before my child’s blood collection?
Yes. Numbing creams or patches may help reduce the discomfort associated with needle procedures.
If you choose to use a numbing cream or patch:
- Please purchase the cream or patches and apply 1 hour before arriving so it has time to work.
- For blood tests, we recommend applying it to both arms (inside the elbows), as the most suitable collection site may vary on the day.
Please contact Australian Clinical Labs if you are unsure about preparation before arriving – phone 0456 762 793.
Preparing Your Child for a Blood Test or Procedure
At some point during childhood, your child may need to have a blood test. The following tips from Australian Clinical Labs can help prepare and support them, making the experience as calm and reassuring as possible:
- Explain the procedure
Let your child know what to expect. Reassure them that it might feel a little pinch but will be over quickly. - Use distraction Depending on your child’s age, distractions such as toys, books, music or conversation about a topic of interest can help reduce anxiety.
- Choose a comfortable position Toddlers may feel more secure sitting on your lap. Our collectors can show you how to safely hold your child during the procedure. Older children may prefer sitting in a chair or lying down. You can still offer comfort by holding their hand and staying close until they feel calm.
Comfort Positioning Posters - Offer praise
Encourage and praise your child for their bravery. Let them know how proud you are and consider offering a small reward if needed.
Please see the following additional resources to help your child prepare for their blood test:

One of the best ways to help children feel calmer and reduce discomfort is simply by having you nearby.
This guide explains how we can keep children safe during procedures while helping them feel comforted and supported.
Take slow, steady breaths and relax as much as possible. Children often pick up on how the adults around them are feeling.
